Dowry demands and harassment remain serious offences under Indian criminal law.
Earlier, such offences were prosecuted under Sections 498A and 406 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Under the new criminal law framework, similar offences are addressed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023:
These provisions protect women from harassment for dowry and unlawful retention of their Stridhan, which includes jewellery, gifts, and property received before or during marriage.
While protecting victims of harassment, AnaghaLegal also ensures that legal remedies are invoked responsibly and not misused.
